Dry and flaky skin is a common complaint in the winter time. Cold, dry winter air sucks the life out of silky, smooth skin. Other factors that contribute to dry skin include aging, nutritional deficiencies, and a genetic predisposition
Dry skin, also called xerosis, is skin that lacks moisture in its outer layer. If left untreated, dry skin can crack and become infected. Keeping dry skin moisturized is important, but some store-bought treatments can be expensive or ineffective.

There are a variety of home remedies a person can use to relieve dry skin. Most of the treatments below can be used as moisturizers unless otherwise stated. The best way to use a moisturizer is to apply it liberally to damp skin after a bath and let it soak in.
Here are some Home Remedies for Dry Skin
Coconut oil

Coconut oil has emollient properties. Emollients fill the spaces between skin cells, creating a smooth surface. That’s why the saturated fatty acids that occur naturally in the coconut can hydrate and smooth the skin.You can use coconut oil daily on even the most sensitive parts of the body.
 These include the area underneath your eyes and around your mouth. Another advantage of coconut oil is that you don’t need to mix it with anything. Coconut is gentle enough for substantial everyday use.
Aloe Vera for Dry Skin:
Aloe Vera gel is often used in the treatment of dry and patchy skin. It is also included in many commercially available lotions and creams, but using fresh aloe gel is the best way to use it. Its polysaccharide helps to retain the moisture levels in the skin. It also enhances collagen and elastin production in the skin thus restoring its suppleness and elasticity. If your dryness is due to skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema, aloe vera can also help to deal with them as it has healing and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties help to alleviate the symptoms of such skin ailments
How to use Aloe Vera:
Cut the aloe leaf diagonally and extract the gel present inside it.Apply some of this fresh gel on the face and massage it in, 
so it is absorbed into the skin.Leave the gel overnight. Store the remaining gel in an air-tight container in a cool place.Use This every night before going to bed.
Oatmeal bath:
Oatmeal is another natural ingredient that can help treat dry skin. Adding powdered oatmeal to a bath or using creams that contain oatmeal may help to relieve dry skin. Extracts from oatmeal had anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, suggesting it can help treat dry skin.
You can make an oatmeal bath at home. Or use a food processor to chop oatmeal into a fine powder, then put it into warm water. You can also try one of the many commercial products available to make an oatmeal soak.
Drinking Milk Daily:
Milk could also offer relief from dry skin, but not when applied to the skin.  a diet including milk could improve dry skin. The study found that a fat contained in milk, called phospholipids, improved the skin barrier in mice when added to their diet. More research is needed to see if drinking milk has the same effect on skin in humans.
Soak a washcloth in cold milk and put the cloth on your dry skin for five to seven minutes. Gently wash off the milk with another cloth soaked in lukewarm water. This way this natural moisturizer will remain on your skin. Do this every other day.
Almond Oil for Dry Skin:
Almond oil has been used for centuries to treat dry skin. It is moisturizing and thus makes your skin smooth and supple. An added advantage of using this oil is its ability to improve your complexion and skin tone . Geranium oil is an antiseptic and an anti-inflammatory agent due to which it is often used in skin care. It can also treat conditions such as eczema which is one of the causes for dry skin.
Avoid allergens and irritants:
sudden occurrence of dry skin might be connected to the clothes you’re wearing or what you’ve exposed your skin to. Sitting by the fireplace, spending time in chlorinated or chemically-treated water, or even wearing wool clothing can all irritate your skin and make it feel dry. Check what you’re putting your skin through, and try to treat it gently.
Rose water For Dry Skin:
It is soothing, moisturizing, and refreshing for your skin. It helps in improving blood circulation to the skin’s surface and its astringent properties balance the skin’s pH. This helps to restore the normal oil production by the skin
Repeat this once every day, preferably after you wash your face once you are back home from a day out in the sun and pollution.
Honey for Dry Skin:
2012 review of research notes that some studies have shown honey to be beneficial for many types of skin diseases.These are all qualities that suggest honey is an ideal at home treatment to relieve dry skin. It is completely natural and can be applied directly to the skin. Before taking a bath or  shower, rub honey all over your body and leave it on for  five to 10 minutes  Repeat daily to enjoy well-moisturized skin. 
Prevention Tips:
It’s important to preserve healthy skin. Your skin is the first line of defense against bacteria and viruses. When your skin is compromised by itching, an infection can occur. You may want to incorporate a good moisturizer into your daily routine, even when your skin isn’t bothering you. In fact, maintaining a healthy skin barrier daily is one of the best ways to prevent outbreaks of dry skin.
 Another essential skincare tip is to use a moisturizing sunscreen every day to prevent skin damage and dryness. Make sure to wear loose-fitting, cotton clothing that draws sweat away from the skin when you’re exposed to high temperatures or skin-irritating conditions. Remember that extremely dry skin can be an indication of a more serious condition. If home remedies aren’t helping, you may need to see a doctor to get a prescription treatment to relieve your dry skin.
